Piano and Voice Lessons

I offer private lessons in piano and voice performance for all level, from the beginner ("Wait, what's a quarter note again?") to the advanced student ("Bring on the Liszt!"). Whether you are looking to pick up the instrument again as an adult, or you are seeking music instruction for your child, I firmly believe that music lessons can be of a great benefit to the student. Music performance teaches the student about creativity, instills discipline and a solid work ethic, and improves confidence in the student's ability to clearly and beautifully express the true self.

Beginner students will learn the fundamentals of music, including rhythm, harmony, and melody. Voice students will master proper breathing technique needed for healthy vocal production; piano students will master proper posture, finger technique, and pedal technique. As the student progresses in his or her curriculum, I will assign music that will expand the musician's technique and artistry. Repertoire for the intermediate to advanced student will include selections from the traditional canon of Western classical literature, but can also include selections from music theater, film scores, and pop music. Students in my studio will also learn basic music theory and ear training skills; these components are a vital asset to any student wishing to pursue musical training at a collegiate level.

WHAT SETS ME APART

In a city like Memphis, there are many excellent voice and piano teachers to choose from, so here is what I have to offer you. I have experience teaching students at every level, including as an active collegiate music professor at a highly regarded liberal arts college. I have experience performing in many different capacities - solo pianist, collaborative pianist, choral singer, solo vocalist, chamber musician, conductor, and worship leader. I have experience performing classical music, music theater, contemporary art music, and contemporary Christian music (CCM). I am young and energetic, and I bring a lot of passion to the instrument and to the music. I teach lessons in the convenience of your own home, and since I live in the central Memphis area, I am conveniently located a short drive anywhere in town.

My position on the faculty of a local college has intimately acquainted me with the demands of the college application process, so I am able to provide coaching to younger students interested in pursuing a music major or minor. I can guide the high school student as he or she prepares application essays, music theory and history entrance exams, audition packets, and on-campus interviews, and I can help students find a college that will be a good match for their skill set and career interests. My coaching can also benefit students who do not anticipate pursuing a music degree. (In the interest of full disclosure, I do teach at Rhodes College, but I am not a representative of the Admissions Department. Any coaching provided would be fair and unbiased).

But most of all, I bring individualized care and attention to each student, being sure to tailor the curriculum and the lesson to each student's needs and desires.
